Wheat growers be provided inputs on subsidised rates: Munawwar
RECORDER REPORT

LAHORE: Ameer Jamaat-e-Islami Syed Munawwar Hasan has said that the government should safeguard the interests of both growers and the general public in so far as the wheat procurement price was concerned. Commenting on the government decision not to raise wheat procurement price, he said in a statement on Tuesday that the real solution lies in cutting down the growers' cost of production by providing them agri inputs on subsidized rates so that they do not suffer losses in wheat cultivation.

Munawwar said India is providing electricity, pesticides and other inputs to farmers on subsidized rates but our government is withdrawing the subsidies under the IMF pressure. As a result, the cost of production of the agricultural products in the country is bound to go up.

The JI said if the growers do not consider the wheat procurement price adequate, the cultivation and production could come down and the government would have to import the commodity on higher prices.

He said the steep raise in the prices of electricity and diesel, agricultural tools and implements and pesticides in the recent months have broken the back of small farmers.
